Volleyball Is Six People Solving A Problem In Two Seconds

A ball crosses the net at considerable speed. Within roughly two seconds, six people have collectively decided who touches it, in what order, and where it is going back.

Nobody spoke. There was no time to speak.

The Three Touch Rule Changes Everything

Volleyball gives a team three contacts before the ball must go back over. That single rule is what makes the sport what it is.

It means individual brilliance is nearly impossible. One player cannot take the ball the length of the court. Every single point requires at least two teammates to cooperate precisely, usually three, under time pressure that does not allow for discussion.

It is the most genuinely collaborative sport there is, and the constraint is what creates that.

The Setter Is The Most Underappreciated Position In Sport

Watch a highlight package and you will see spikes. Enormous, satisfying, decisive spikes.

Almost nobody watches the touch before it, which is the one that decided everything. The setter reads where the block is forming, decides which attacker has the better opportunity, and delivers the ball to a point in the air where that attacker can arrive at speed.

Every great attack is a setter's decision that somebody else got credit for. The Statue Volley Spikes design shows the moment everybody remembers, and it is worth knowing that the interesting part happened just before it.

Reading Rather Than Reacting

Elite volleyball is played faster than human reaction time properly allows, which is why the good players are not reacting at all.

They are reading the setter's shoulders, the attacker's approach angle, the position of the block, and moving to where the ball is going to be before it has been hit. Getting that wrong looks like slowness. It is almost always a misread rather than a lack of pace.

Why The Owl Was A Good Instinct

Elsewhere in this catalogue an owl plays volleyball, and it is a better joke than it first appears.

Silent, watching everything, arriving without warning. That is a genuinely accurate description of a good middle blocker, and anybody who has been beaten by one will confirm it.

The Best Sport To Play Badly

One last thing in volleyball's favour. It is enormously fun at a low standard.

A rally between six people who are all mediocre is still a rally, and still satisfying. Not every sport is generous like that.

Find a net this summer. You will be worse than you expect and enjoy it more than you expect.
